Daphne laurel (Daphne laureola)
Description
- Native to Europe and northern Africa
- Shrub that grows 0.5-1.8 m tall
- Oblong, evergreen leaves
- Yellow fluted flowers
- Small, black berries
- Adapted to shade and semi-shaded areas
- Likely found in the understory of Douglas fir forest.
Consequences of Invasion
- Limits growth of native plants and reduces biodiversity
- Limits the amount of light that reaches the forest floor
- Rapidly colonizes areas
- Changes soil chemistry
- All parts of the plant have toxic compounds
- Contact with sap can cause skin irritation
- Consumption can be fatal
Prescription for Control
- Gloves and protective clothing should always be worn.
- Pull or cut plants
- Focus on areas that see high potential use by humans first
- Contain any seeds or berries from female plants
- Plant competitive shade tolerant native plants (Dull Oregon Grape, Tall Oregon Grape or Sword Fern) where soil disturbance has occurred
- Do NOT compost
- Do NOT burn or chip plant parts as noxious chemicals will be released into the air
- Do NOT transport plant cuttings inside an enclosed vehicle
